Dalton Civitan Club: Dalton’s Oldest Civic Club since 1921
Join us at the Dalton Golf and Country Club on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at noon. All are welcome to the Dalton Civitan Club, the city’s longest-standing civic club.
Paul B. Fite was the 1st president of the Dalton Civitan Club serving from 1921-1929. Mr. Fite was Principal of Dalton Brick And Tile Corporation, if you look, you can see many of the bricks on the walls of the buildings in downtown Dalton stamped with Dalton Brick and Tile.
However, did you know that in 1914 Dalton was competing with Rome in an effort to get U.S. Highway 41 to come through Dalton? The highway was to connect Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn. This group of men joined in a motorcade from Dalton to Chattanooga in order to promote Dalton. Dalton’s motto for the name of the highway was Battlefield Route. The group made the trip in the automobile owned by Paul B. Fite. They won the cup for having the largest number of representatives. Tom Boaz is at left holding a cane. At the far back is J. G. McLellan wearing a white hat and having one hand on the shoulder of J. J. Copeland. Dr. J. L. Jarvis is wearing a bow tie. Louis Crawford is leaning on the sign and Paul B. Fite is holding the cup. Seated on the bumper left to right: Frank S. Pruden, B. A. Tyler, Mr. Bishop from Adairsville.
Sorry Rome.
